Yes, it is extremely useful.
The 4 19" Samsung monitors are connected to my crappy windows vista box. There is no useful windows spaces app. It is very helpful when comparing images with some of the work I do.
The iMac runs independently of them. It however is connected to the 46" Sony TV for media(running OSXBMC, which you see on screen). Spaces on the iMac is quite a nice feature, but at times, it is better to have multiple displays so that you can display multiple images at one time.
Sure they are overkill for most, but they fit my needs just fine
