Good Idea

Hey, that is a good idea. I will start setting money aside as I make it to (hopefully) save up enough for an iPhone and a plan -- or if I win the contest here on Mactropolis I will only need to get the data plan!

Also. . .

I meant to ask if anyone knows how much the data plan will be? I know it is $20 a month now I believe but I heard talk that it may rise to $30 a month. Is this accurate?

hah its funny how there are more votes on "it will launch later" than "it will launch on the 9th". I guess a lot of people were shocked

AT&T is smart in a business sense. Subsidize prices on the phone so people think "$199 for a new 3G iPhone!! Wow what a price." Then, they get hit with an extra $10 a month for the data plan. . . over the 2 year contract AT&T makes an extra $240 off the data plan than before, so it probably covers cost. Gotta love good business moves, but hate it when you aren't the one making them.

I'm no financial guru, but I recommend everyone considers the real cost of owning an iPhone...it's not small - $85 a month (U.S.) for 2 years - adds up to a considerable amount of money. As much as I respect and admire Jobs, it not true that the iPhone 3G is cheaper. Prior to iPhone, I would've laughed if you had told me that I would be paying so much for my phone in a year or two. I realize it's much more than just a phone, but I just don't want anyone (and I know a few people who are considering who really shouldn't) to get into something that they won't be able to afford down the road. And with an entry price of $199, many will be sucked into a plan that they will struggle to justify later on.

Some of you should consider an iPod Touch (with a separate, much cheaper phone plan) - and while there are trade-offs - the financial trade-off is the one you should realize...

No, I'm not your dad - I just have friends that I care about.

I agree with you Webwise, its like subprime loans for the techno or apple geeks -- At least to those who do not really think about things before buying them. Me I think and think and think, and then when I get tired of thinking so much -- make the final decision on whether I can afford it or not.

Thanks. Unfortunately its probably true, parents and 20 something year olds probably will get stuck paying more than they thought and have to cancel it.
