Are you going to purchase a new Macbook, or Macbook Pro?

After today's announcement, will you be purchasing/upgrading to the new notebooks?

As for my decision, I wanted a MBP, but with the new video cards in the regular Macbook, I may not need to go for a Pro.

New MBP 2.53Ghz ordered. "Stock" other than upgraded to 7200RPM HDD.

Be here in a week.....

A bit disappointed that they do not allow more than 4GB RAM

Question To upgrade or not to upgrade... HELP!

Just the question I am asking in the final weeks of my PhD.... will be finished in 2008, working right now off a 12" PB... but I had to vote for undecided, cause there's not only good sides to the beautiful and powerful upgrade:

Pro upgrade:

- much much more bang in graphics and interface- if I mount my iphone, the fan goes on instantly... the G4 is coming in the ages at times... things aren't as snappy as with my Core2Duo MacMini... and they COULD BE NOW

- smaller, cuter, sturdy aluminum... fell in love with that material the moment I bought my PB

- nice wide screen and the new keyboard- am working from two external keyboards of the new alu type (alright, I am a sucker for that material)... never typed better actually... hard time adapting back when I am on the road

-easy upgrades of hard drive and RAM... OK RAM is not such an issue, aside of the fact that with 1GB my 12" is maxed out... I also already considered changing the hard drive, but after looking at the ifixit replacement guide I thought going for an external hard drive is much less hassle with FireWire...(see cons for that ;-/...)

- my battery is still good for another 45min. of wire-free working, but not more

Con upgrade:

- this PB is now three years old, one of the last G4s to be assembled... and it looks basically new! No dent, no scratch the keyboard still shiny, not even a screw missing! It hurts me to think of putting it away!

- the matte LCD: I never was the glossy screen user on the road- had a glossy on my last PC notebook, didn't quite got the thrill of it in spite of the crispier graphics... but this is rather a minor point, I learned to value glass and aluminum with my iphone, I certainly did!

- no FireWire- I just love the ease of target mode, mounting my notebook at home to my external drive and to my MacMini... SO easy, fast and convenient! External drives are really fast and do not use processing time with the main chipset, so load REALLY is low!

- basically, upgrading would be pure luxury, since my 12" last revision is doing the job with Leopard as wonderful as no Vista upgrader would ever dream for his old hardware ;-)... this little beauty is doing a marvelous job keeping the pace with all new progs I throw at it- and I don't need the graphical bang for my work... conducted my PhD thesis on Mellel with Bookends and with this ca.100 page document plus images neither hard- nor software failed me just once!

- In spite of the age of my 12" whenever I unpack it the attention is on it! I have one offer to buy the machine per meeting or so... the small footprint while having an integrated drive and FireWire just is unmatched- until now...

So, what do You guys think of it? Is the Macbook worth the upgrade or not?

cheers, mat!-)

Madmacmat,

I think you should, you deserve(phd) it! I think your pb has done a great job time to retire it/sell it.

Yes, I do. My wife thinks I have too many! (though she has no problem using any of them)

Can you really have too much of a good thing?

And on another note, it looks like they may be upgradable to more than 4GB RAM too!! Although, right now would be certainly cost prohibitive, but give it 6 months

So anxiously awaiting the arrival of the new MBP!!!

Should only be a few more days!

bob, thanks for the clear suggestion!

I will certainly check out the Macbooks after my defense in November- but right now it could shift my focus even more than it's currently doing ;-)
