Interesting read. I'd sum it up this way - if you create great experiences - whether entertaining, informative, and/or useful - people will pay for it.

I believe that most apps will be free...but it's the really, really good ones that will cost you - (with some exceptions). I also believe it [apps that cost you] results in better, more intuitive and well designed applications...

I'm kind of scared now that apps that were free on Installer (for Jailbroken iPhones/iPods) are going to go commercial and start charging. At least there are the open source ones.

I had a talk with someone regarding ways of making apps free, I sustained my idea of being ad-supported, he said that it's unlikely and he hopes it won't come to this, but it seems that I was right

yeah i noticed this on another forum. uggh i thought there were actually going to be "free" apps but I'm not to fond of the idea of pop-up ads. Thats the thing i enjoy about cell phone internet browsing, no pop-ups. but since i guess the "free" ones are "free", they deserve to advertise their better products.

First off, I doubt that we will be seeing any "pop-ups" simply because there is no up for them to pop to, and there is not the same concept of windows that the full sized OS has. There still might be some adware; there are apps now on Installer embedded with Google Adsense. I don't however, expect a lot of this in the future. This is because adware for iPhone and iPod Touch is just too awkward. We will probably just end up with freeware, shareware, and donationware. I just don't see how Apple is going to manage DRM...

I assumed that there would be applications that would be a small fee. Apple at this present time already charges iPod Touch users a fee to upgrade their iPod Touch with the latest software. Why would an application be any different. I'm assuming there may also be some donation-ware applications as well as entirely free applications.

This is a pretty good list of all of the apps expected so far: iPhone AppStore apps round-up - iPhone Atlas

Among the free ones:
  • AOL Radio
  • Ebay
  • Loopt
  • TypePad
  • AIM

Wow there are going to be some pretty cool apps and its awesome that the AIM app will be free.

And by Pop-ups, hac, its like an ad you have to wait for before you play your game and once the ad is finished, the game starts.
