Recommended 500GB Backup Drives

I'm searching for a new hd to use as a backup with time machine on my MacBook Pro...

At the moment I have it nailed down to the Western Digitla 500GB My Book Studio Edition

The Apple Store (Canada) - Western Digital 500GB My Book Studio Edition

Or the Iomega 500GB UltraMax Desktop Hard Drive

The Apple Store (Canada) - Iomega 500GB UltraMax Desktop Hard Drive

The Iomega is a bit cheaper, however it doesn't have the FW 800 capability the western digital drive has (Iomega has FW400)... However, the western digital brand as a whole probably isn't as reliable as Iomega... They've been around forever... Plus some negative reviews of the WD on the apple site seem to back that up. I'm tempted to go with the Iomega drive at this point but would appreciate some insight.

I had real problems with my Ultramax. Failed within two years. Of course, the same horror stories can be found about WD or Seagate.

Really? Yeah I suppose you're right... the thing is going to break eventually anyway... Suppose some are simply built better than others and generally last a bit longer...

Got an Iomega (not the ultramax) had it for 3 years, no faults.
Got a Freecom, had 2 years, no faults.
Got a 500GB Maxtor which failed in the first month :|

Wow really, problems with the Maxtor?... Well, you get a lemon in every bunch I suppose...But I certainly don't want one that fails out of the box or after 1 month

I pulled the trigger. Went with the 500gb Iomega... Price was right and free shipping from Apple is always cool. Should have it in a week or so!

So how is your hard drive now? I purchased a Western Digital (500) My Book Home and its just okay. I formatted immediately to Mac Journal, as I read on other web sites and partitioned it into three parts: 1) Scratch disk for Photoshop, 2) Traditional Hard drive partition and 3) Time Capsule partition. My only grip is it doesn't always recognize it and I have to reboot the machine for the firewire to pick it up.
