Did Apple Delay the iPhone SDK on Purpose?

What do you think? There was rumor after rumor when the SDK was going to drop, and it never happened... was this a strategic move or were they simply having internal issues?

Seems to me the longer they delayed it, the more publicity they received, and the more hype was generated.

The iPhone dominated in 07 as a largely closed device... Now in 08 with the SDK, the doors are virutally 'open' for developers now... Look out, it's going to be interesting times ahead

interesting times indeed...

Actually there also were rumors that apple out of cost efficiency first released a 2.5G phone, and not due to some weird energy problem as Jobs stated- including 3G would have resulted in an extra effort of including a lot of software helping USE 3G through the iphone... summing those two points up it makes a neat package of reasons why they didn't start 3G initially...

What do You think?

I think there were probably some development delays... but the delays were 'inconvenient' delays... why launch everything at once when you can drag it out and get more bang for your buck?

I don't think the iPhone was really ready for mainstream and the first six months or so have been used to beta test it in the real world. I still am amazed we still don't have Copy and Paste on the unit. I think Apple wanted the product out more than they wanted third party app capability.

Now that third party apps are just around the corner, give me a 3G iPhone and I will buy one.

I'm with You there, mabs... cute cat, btw... reminds me of the cute lemure in "madagaskar" somehow...

I totally agree that the mere power of the iphone just starts to be unveiled in detail- and we could guess, for some parts even to apple itself... so after all maybe the slow and careful approach gives them more control over things happening, who knows... all i know is that VERY interesting and exciting times are ahead... mind you, not saying whether these times are positively or negatively exciting ;-)

I would say the months to come are going to be very positive.

With the launch of iPhone on Enterprise especially... we're going to be seeing some great things.

3G iPhone, 3rd party apps, iPhone on Enterprise... huge.
