iPod Touch Update

One of our bloggers, Mike Santos recently reported to me that the 'location' feature in google maps isn't working properly for him. He's located in Alaska, yet it locates and places him in Kansas! Oops, just a little bit off!

I'm disappointed to hear that it isn't working well for him.

Anyone else out there having trouble with the iPod Touch updated? Or has anyone else out there actually shelled out the $20 for the update? Seemed like a worthwhile update to me for $20... Although I had to admit I was a bit peeved when 'Steve-O' announced it would be a paid update.

I have the iPhone and also received the new update.
I have already used the "current location" feature several times over and I have only experienced an error one time. I was actually located about 10 blocks out of the circle's diameter, the good news is that when I prompted it to give me the directions I needed, they were still entirely accurate.

Perhaps the problem is that there aren't enough cell phone towers in Alaska. In Steve Job's Keynote he said that the way they locate us is via cellphone triangulation. I live in a major metropolitan city so that may be why I dont have the problems...

dancingrockets, I'm sure you're correct.

Sad thing is, in more remote areas, where you could potentially really NEED the GPS... it probably won't work too well!

I live in Canada, and there are some remote places 3 to 4 hours north of me... I would wager a bet the feature would not work there either.

I can't see this problem being fixed any time soon if it IS a lack of cell phone towers causing the issue... Some places simply don't have towers for hundreds and hundreds of miles!

I've got the update and it doesn't work on my iPod Touch - that's because the only Wi-Fi around me is from personal routers. I've not had a chance to try it in say, London, which I would hope has been covered. I'm hoping the feature isn't US-only at the moment.

Yeah, I've bought it but the Location feature doesn't work, at least not until you get into a Wi-Fi location that has been tracked by the company Apple are paying for the monitoring service.

That's too bad... the way Steve touted it in the keynote it seemed as though there would be pretty much worldwide coverage. Looks like they have a lot of gaps to fill.
