Apple posts iPhone upgrade guide

Apple has posted a new support article for people upgrading from first-generation iPhones to the new coming iPhone 3G, enabling them to carry over their content from the original device such as notes, photos, e-mail accounts and text messages. The upgrade guide notes that in the US, people must use the new SIM card shipped with each 3G; in other countries, the card from the old phone will function in the new one. In either case, iTunes 7.7 or later is required.

Users are first expected to sync their 2G iPhone with iTunes, and run a backup of the phone's contents. The 3G device is then connected, at which point iTunes asks if users want to restore from backup or set up a new device. Finally, the 3G should restart, at which point you are able to normally sync your new iPhone.

Apple warns that if files and settings are missing on the 3G, the backup has likely failed, and the 3G must have its firmware restored so the upgrade can begin again.

Just trying to help out all the (lucky) people who have old iPhones and want to upgrade to 3G for the low price of $199 or $299. grrr i envy you.

I don't have to worry about that I don't have a iPhone 2G. But I am sure it will help some people on here

Yeah i thought so too but i guess nobody here seems to have a 2G iPhone. Oh Well.
