Why is Twitter so popular?

I do not have any experience with Twitter but occasionally see on websites that it is so great. Can someone tell me why it so great?

Edit: I think its like Instant messaging, emaling, and blogging(no idea what that is) all in one, seems pretty cool to keep in touch.

I use it, it helps me stay updated what my friends find on blogs, sites, news, etc.

But doesn't twitter pages just get cluttered and disorganized?

Nah, Chris Pirillo says that twitter is "Organized Chaos" on his video. The only negative thing that I see on twitter is that it gets this "over capacity" really often..

Twitter is something you will either love or hate (not use). It's great for myself since I don't have the time to keep up on Facebook or MySpace. It allows me to chat with friends and family and see what others are doing real quick.

I've opened a Twitter account this past days, but I'm yet to be hooked, so for the moment I don't know why it's so popular

If you don't get "hooked" up with it, it's because of 2 things.

1)You have less than 10 friends
or
2)You don't have an interesting tweeting friend

On number 2 what I mean is someone who posts interesting info, news, links, etc.
