My Favourite intro

This famous lifehacker.com post about switching to a mac may seem a little too basic, but it covers those little problems we all run into when we first take the that first switchy step.

Hack Attack: A guide for switching to a Mac

My favorite part:
Quote:
Unless you have your own system for arranging apps on your Mac, copying new apps to the Applications folder is a good practice. What you don't want to do is forget to move the app from the .dmg folder to your hard disk.
My Parents when they first switched would have like 3 msn chat dmg's running. I had to explain.

What was everyones trickiest adjustment coming from windows?

Mine was the one mentioned about opening a selected file (it annoyed me a lot as I like flying through Finder with keyboard commands and expected Enter to open a file, not rename it...

"Chances are you've opened a file or program on your Windows desktop by selecting the file and then hitting the Enter key to launch it. If you're anything like me, you do this a lot. The problem is, when you try doing the same thing on your Mac, your Mac thinks you want to rename the file instead of open it (don't ask me why). If you want to open the file, you have to hit Cmd-O (for open)".

Hehehe, I can remember that, too, Mabsey ;-)....

I guess I had my hardest time (and sometimes still have) with the copying/moving inconsistency- it originates from a time where You had one partition on Your drive and additional removable things...

When I now have a special folder in my Finder navigation bar, say, the downloads folder, I do not necessarily remember what partition it is on- and whether if I drag an drop stuff will be moved or copied... this is a REALLY annoying thing- luckily apple integrated a global fast search with spotlight to find files no matter where they are... annoying none the less...

A slight peev is also that when something is in the Trash, it doesn't have a restore to original location option. So, when something is in the Trash, is is sorta more deleted than on the Windows' side of things. Not a big deal for me though.

Guess you're right there mabsey. You know, I used to work almost exclusively on Windows machines and that is true... you can restore to the original location on a Windows PC...

But to tell you the truth... when I made the switch over to a mac this wasn't something I missed... if I want to recover something from the trash I simply pull it out to the desktop and place it wherever I need with the Finder. For some reason it never occurred to me that on a PC you can restore to the original location...Guess it wasn't a feature I coveted that much!

Not a biggie for me I suppose!

I guess with Time Machine around You won't go hunting in the trash but rather look in the past for answers ;-)...
