Showing off...

So, I shall be the first one to drop my panties system-wise here... since this thread was stepmothered until now, let's get it over with! Believe it or not, I am working solely on a

- 12" Powerbook G4 /1,5Ghz with 1,25GBRAM and 80GB hard drive, one from the last batch from Nov. 2005... In my opinion you don't need more than a notebook, a good external keyboard and a good flatscreen...
this beauty first was working alongside of a P4 PC I assembled myself but using that one only as a stand for my notebook I rather sold it before I would pay money to rid me of it ;-)... I never played the games so frequently, anyway...

-the PB is regularly attached to an amazing aluminum apple keyboard with mighty mouse either at work or at home (I couldn't type on the desk terrarium any more after typing on the new keyboard so effortlessly!)... in spite of what anyone says about the mighty mouse's flaws, it works very good for me...

- I also have a black 19" Formac monitor at home- this beauty is fitting so nicely to all the things mac on my desk and I like the quality of the display they used- as well as that the thing is auto-adjusting on connection...

- for Time Machine I am using a 7200rpm 250GB Seagate hard drive that also contains my music library

- I also own an 3G Ipod (no, not with UMTS, that's the one with the four buttons above the non-click-wheel... the battery is next to dead so it is somewhat PERMANENTLY installed on an Altec Lansing InMotion audio system

- last, to finish with somtehing nice, that's my iphone, then... 8G, firmware 1.1.1 (1.1.4 via Ziphone today, march 17th) and simply the best thing I ever bought to accompany my Powerbook- it is simply amazing how seamless everything works between these devices compared to other phones I used before... I keep this in my hip bag and in an amazing Marware sport suit while having it permanently connected to my shure adapter with microphone and the simply outstanding skullcandy earplugs... best things sound-wise I heard on for a long time...

So, I hope I gave You an idea of my computing setup- what are You working on? Write about it, celebrate it, point out why it's the one and only thing for You- cheers, mat!-)

UPDATES:
- march 2008: bought a small MacMini 1,83GHz Core2Duo for hardware backup purposes... I like the internet sharing a lot since! Sitting on my bed surfing the net with my Powerbook or iphone is very nicely working! Only grudge is that if I want to use encrypted (WPA) internet sharing after waking up the MacMini, I have to uncheck/check the internet sharing box every time in order to make it work... if any of You has a workaround or better experience with that, please share! Since I am living at a place where almost all neighbouring flats have wireless computers I'd rather not let them have free access to mine;-)...

mat, the question is.... when are you going to step up to a MacBookPro? Or is the Powerbook holding up fine for ya?

...been asking meself the very same thing over and over... but there's two things keeping me from doing so:

- for my kind of work and the fanciest things in Leopard the G4 does a still good enough job, though I admit seeing my Mac Mini Core2Duo perform I can't help but long for that power inside my notebook as well... which leads me to

- I am spoilt. Or maybe I've seen too many "used and worn" Macbooks in white and black to consider this step, looking back at my neat-sized 12" PB is just an amazing thing to do.... the 15" Macbook Pro of course is stretching out its hands in my direction every time I am at an Apple store... but due to the price tag this one is no option for me small PhD student...

But initially I thought You were in the PB club as well, weren't you? Don't tell me You silently sneaked away!!! Cheers!

haha, no, actually I've never owned a powerbook! Have been using my macbook pro here for well over a year now. No issues, no concerns... she works great!

It was a more expensive option in comparison to the MacBook... (or iBook at the time) but it was worth every penny.

hehehehe, how far has it come, Mayor... it is "she" already ;-)... but I fear to totally be able to anticipate the emotion behind Your words... Not that I feel better in terms of superiority but certainly in terms of quality and integrity of the system I am working with...

If the main drive is recognized... seems I have to bring my MacMini back to repair / exchange the hard drive... <sheesh>... I'll post the proceedings...

Oh, and to answer Your question: it seems apple is going to refurbish the whole line in late summer/ fall... if they really bring out a sturdy small-footprint successor to my 12" beauty or anything near that I guess I'll be sold- I mean bought... ah, You know what I mean!

Thanks, the new harddrive is doing a good job! What does Your setup look like? For winning the iphone You could make the effort describing Your Mac family, I'd be interested!-)

that's a good start, I'd say... a lot of potential to get more apple stuff, though ;-)))... but eventually, You'll value the quality and want the same convenience on Your desktop as well?
