How is the Reception and Sound with IPhone

I am curious how is the reception and sound quality of the IPhone. I am sure the sound quality is good but is it loud? I have heard the reception isn't as good as other phones out there.

I've never had problems with cellular or wireless reception on the iPhone itself (but I have with AT&T signal strength because I'm in the outskirts of the city).

I have read about others complaining about it, which is always hard to evaluate because it may not be the iPhone, but the cell tower distance OR strength of the wireless signal as opposed to the phone itself. I've also read that Apple has worked to maximize the signal receptors in the new iPhone, thus the plastic back as opposed to the metal...

In terms of both the earpiece and the speakers, they should have made the volume range louder - although I've never had to ask someone to repeat what they're saying - it just didn't seem as loud as it should be at the highest volume setting. Same with the speakers...I would form a "cup" with my hand next to the bottom speakers to improve the volume.

The good news is that these issues, according to a number of sources, has been addressed in the iPhone 3G...

Thanks man, that was great info. I have been wanting to find out. I really do hope they have strengthen the reception. When my dad went to AT&T in Western Kentucky, the own cell phone place couldn't get the IPhone to pick up in the store, in the city. So they showed him the Blackberry and he got it instead.

I live in Chicago, so I better not have a problem in the city, but I want to be sure I have reception when I come back to Western Kentucky, which I do frequently. I do realize that Western Kentucky only has edge right now.

Something else to consider is a wireless signal booster:

Amazon.com: Wireless Extenders Cell Phone Signal Booster - Dual Band YX510 PCS/CEL: Cell Phones & Service

Make sure you choose the right one - they have different models for different carriers...and not all carriers are supported.

I am sure it probably doesn't, but who knows. Does the IPhone have a way to add an external antenna on it? I believe one time I seen a case for the IPhone that was also suppose to boost its signal.
