Why can't you install...

programs on the iphone? Like 3rd part programs straight from their respective websites?

I can do this on my other phone, as long as the software is compatible with my phone hardware. But it doesn't seem like you can do this with the iphone.

Am I correct?

You can. You can jailbreak any iphone (visit ziphone.org or use google to get access to tons of info) and have access to hundreds of apps to install...I'm surprised you haven't heard of it...

On July 11th, the Apple will offer their solution to offering apps with the new 2.0 version of the iPhone software and apps will be downloadable (and installed) on the device OR through iTunes (and then syncing).
