Paying for Upgrades

I hate having to do it - darn Sarbanes Oxley - but I must admit that as I found myself only using the Apple apps on my hacked iPod Touch, I decided to purchase the $20 upgrade to the iPod Touch 1.1.3 release.

Anyone else done this? I guess most of you aren't happy about having to pay for it?

And, will you be paying for the 2.0 release so you can get third party apps on your iPod Touch?

mabsey,

I think a lot of people out there are willing to pay for the upgrade. I remember after watching the macworld video where his steveness was talking about this upgrade... Initially I thought to myself.. 'well now, that's no good... are people really going to pay for that!?'...

But to my surprise the next day, I began reading stories of folks happily paying to upgrade their touches... Perhaps I'm wrong, my memory might be a bit foggy but that's how I remember it!

Well mere moments ago I took the plunge and spent the $20 on the upgrade. I don't mind paying for substantial upgrades but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot here to justify the cost. The weather feature is nice. I'll never use the stock updates. Notepad seems pretty disposable. Maps is a nice feature but after using an actual GPS, it seems a little underwhelming. The last new feature is an enhanced email program. It works great for webmail options like Hotmail and Yahoo but I've been unable to get it to work properly with my Shaw account.

I'll rate this update 2.5 bites of the apple out of 5.

You can eat an apple in 5 bites?

The payed upgrades do seem annoying, but I'm sure there was a reason (what was it anyway?). I do enjoy not needing to pay for my iPhone upgrades but I wouldn't mind paying for the upgrade if I had a touch.

yeah but if they were free, apple wouldn't have enough $100's for their toilet paper rolls.

In my opinion, $10 is nothing to make an iPod a whole lot more than an iPod. If that's too much, don't get it. Either way, stop the whining.

I can see both sides of the table. But the difference with IPod Touch and IPhone is you are still theoretically paying for the IPhone every month you have phone service.

I have also heard that some cell phone contracts dictate that the phone will be updated to the latest operating system as long you are a customer. I know T-Mobile done that with a couple of their WM phones.
